...railways do not operate in a marketplace. They are monopolistic by nature; the British "privatization" was by name only... Brits have the highest fares in Europe with lessor equipment & services, hence renationalization polls VERY favourably amongst the voting public.

the purpose of railways is to provide efficient transportation of people and resources. the goal of the railway should be efficiency and not profit. as long as the rail system is easy to use and is efficient, the money invested in the rail system by the government will be yield much higher returns in the form of a boost in the economy.

Airlines do not have small branch lines which they have to keep afloat; they start their flights from Airport which are usually found close to big cities and end their flights in a similar fashion. As the draw area/sphere of influence of an airport is quite large (as there are only a small amount of them compared to train stations), a decent amount of passenger numbers is secured: people accept to travel longer distances by car or train to use an airport. The last sentence shows the difference between the two and the problem for running railways on a profit: railways are critical and primary infrastructure of regions and countries which are needed to get people conveniently from one place to another every day. In order to make this convenient, the stations need to be close to the people using them - even if it's only a few people that use a certain station. If you start closing those stations or whole branch lines, people will not walk to the next town to board another train - they are forced to use the car anyway so they might as well go the entire distance. Now either the companies start losing money, or they close the lines which weaken peripheral communities even more. The population becomes more car dependent as well which means more road traffic which means higher costs for road infrastructure which usually means more of the taxpayers money being used. Public transport should be a basic service for citizens (it must be in order to be fully efficient). If it is run to create profit, it is no longer a service, because fares rise and many citizens will lose access.

I feel like a similar situation can be applied to just about everything that can be considered a public infrastructure… Public infrastructure almost inherently will make losses somewhere, and thus not align with the goal of a private company. Unless if some company can come up with a revolutionary new technology that can provide that service at a drastically reduced rate or something, that is.

In Denmark the Danish State Rail has been running trains without ever making a profit forever. So indicating that if it is just run by the state, it will be better is not always right. The real problem here is that rail is very hard to make profitable, because it is inherently slow, compared to owning your own car.

I don't understand how long haul intercity bus services can be profitable, but trains, which carry more people, faster, and with less labor, is not profittable.

I used to live in Japan, where by all accounts the privatisation of JR was a huge success, but I've never been able to find out what if anything they did differently to us in the UK, or why they managed to make it work. I'd love to see a video on that, and you seem to be the man to make that video!

I feel this video missed a very important aspect to this fiasco, the years where railtrack (who ran the network infrastructure) massively cutback maintenance of the infrastructure and from 1997 to 2000 led to a series of deadly rail crashes.

Some myopic statements. No comparison to the garbage management of BR. No comparative with alternative models. The issue of the pandemic is an opportunist excuse, its more to do with the need to maintain public transport patronage in the face of climate change. Bizarre conclusion that despite increased patronage and customer satisfaction during the privatisation model - its unpopular. A grossly incoherent account of the issues.

14:06 That is simply false "complete rail privatization was something few countries had even considered-let alone implemented." Been to Japan? The Japanese rail system is mostly private and is the by far the best and busiest in the world.

So passengers are paying higher fares than ever before and the government's subsidies are higher than ever before. And yet the private sector was supposed to be able to do it cheaper than the public sector and make a profit to boot! I've always believed that the original train companies made their profits from freight and the passenger services were a loss-leader. What better proof do you need for the latter?

It worked at first. There was a massive amount of investment in new stock that probably wouldn't have happened under BR. Also an improvement in the customer facing skills of the staff. It is the government that blew it keeping track and signalling in a quasi-government company enabling pass the parcel when things went wrong. Then as time went on they got too greedy encouraging the rail companies to make impossible bids. The final nail in the coffin came when companies made ambitious service bids that they were unable to deliver because the promised infrastructure improvements failed to materialise. On top of that there is always been a fixed belief in government circles that people who have no practical experience about railways are the best people to run them because they bring a "fresh mind" to the business.

As someone who has actually worked for the railway for well over 20 years, I can tell you ALL the REAL reasons why the experiment has failed. Its down to the non operational, non experienced, incompetent management structure that was been installed across many companies. Every day I see thousands of £££ wasted !!! All those companies running little parts of the railway network. All working against each other for compensation for late running and their main target in there sights is the tax payer supported Network Rail as well as each other. They are not proper railway companies. They simply have no idea what the hell they are doing. The managers have never been frontline staff and have no understanding of the jobs that they are now recruiting the next generation of staff for. I actually support the system but it is failing BECAUSE of the British way of running a company. We have all seen British retailers as well as other countless well known companies go down the pan in recent years. I call it the British Management disease. Jumped up, incompetent, self important, non operational, and too scared to do a real job of REAL worth and value and have the nerve to think they are actually MORE important in the industry than those who DO !!! and during covid, all working from home (if u can call what they do work !!!

By the way it's not a free market perspective. If you're travelling in a single area you can normally only use 1 provider to get around that area, that's not free market really. Privatization with this much overhead normally doesn't work because it's not allowing for competition. Government ran systems are normally terrible and not as cost effective look at royal mail and compare it to other delivery services (not Hermes) and soon when Stuart is widespread it just won't be able to compete. They are more cost effective and ran much better but that's because it allows for competition. However the UK train system isn't as bad as it's made out to be. Try the German train system. If you think the fair is expensive go to Stockholm, their train systems are amazing best in the world however it's double the price for a ticket.

Some key politicians must be getting "greased" with some of that sweet corporate railway profits. This story is not going to end, because I guarantee this will have to again be covered in 2023, 2028, 2031 etc...

Privatisation means revenue surplus goes into the bank accounts of profit-seeking corporate execs never to be seen again (or even taxed as they move it offshore.) Nationalisation or public ownership means revenue surplus is invested into the service to improve it, to reduce prices for customers or to pay the workers better like they deserve.

Fun to see that we have the same problem in both the UK and Denmark, but for different reasons as according to this video, it is the privatization of the rail that is the fault, while we get some of the same problems in Denmark because of our State-owned rail: DSB. Personly I would be glad to see the privatization from the UK here in Denmark as DSB has failed its job, and become a political battleground

There is only one word to accurately describe why successive UK governments want to privatise the railways - UNIONS. The unions in the UK are highly political, directly fund the Labour party and have absolutely no shame in holding ordinary, non-involved citizens to ransom in order to extort more money in negotiations. Transport is essential, but that never stopped them striking constantly for more money. Of course, they said it was to do with safety and fairness, but whenever you looked at the detail these were always inflated concerns and more money was ALWAYS the answer. Just look at TfL and the London Underground - always striking or piping up about something, usually framed as a safety concern, and yet their employees are some of the most high earning, heavily 'bonused' and financially incentivised workers in the country. They get extra money for any little thing that would be considered normal duty anywhere else, not just a little bit either but hundreds or thousands a time. Unions are the problem with any nationalised industry because they have added political power when the government is the employer.

so, really, they didn't privatize it. they sold the provision of government services to private companies, dictated how _exactly_ how they must run (which is to say, to be run like government, generally at a short-term loss), and were shocked when private companies repeatedly failed. did the UK really set out to implement the worst of both models? it seems like they couldn't have done worse if they tried to.

Bring back Network SouthEast, keep ScotRail, TfW Rail and Northern which are networks in their own right, merge everything else into a reformed Regional Railways and bring back InterCity to connect each area. Cities that want to create local commuter networks inside the national networks like Liverpool, London or Tyne and Wear should be encouraged.

The railways were privatised originally. It's just that they kept losing money and couldn't recoup it, thus they were Grouped into the Big Four, and then later during the war, nationalised. Ultimately the railways will always operate at a loss. The biggest idiotic move was the Beeching Report, which caused many old lines to be shut down, and worse still, to have the land sold off. Now, many of those lines would actually be useful again, but the rails aren't there anymore and you'd have to compulsory purchase a large number of buildings to re-establish them. There are certain services which I feel should fundamentally be nationalised. Electricity, Water, Healthcare, Emergency Services, and Railways. As it stands, currently only healthcare and emergency services remain national. I'm particularly irritated over water and electricity because many have little to no choice over their provider, and many feel resentful at the idea of foreign companies owning our important services.

Fun fact: Back in the 1970s when Deutsche Bahn introduced their new "premium" product, they decided to pay licensing fees to British Rail in order to be able to use the "prestigious" name "InterCity".... Fast forward a bit and the Brits are instead copying the German "ICE" (Inter City Express) with their youngest order for "premium" trains....

1980s "privatisation" was the point in history when everything started going downhill for the middle class and working class of Western countries. Just revisit the list of companies that were sold off. Imagine if they were still owned by the country and its people, how much better would things be. As for rail, look to the gold standard of how railway is run or should be run - China, with its gleaming infrastructure, fast trains, comfortable and clean service. Do you think the Chinese operate a private for-profit model or a state-owned one?

One of the craziest effects of all this is that pricing got really weird if you were going on a journey that used trains from multiple companies. For example if you were going from London to Manchester with a changeover in Birmingham, you could save a huge amount of money by booking London to Birmingham and Birmingham to Manchester as 2 separate journeys. Now imagine how crazy that principle gets if you're on a journey using trains from 4 different companies! You could genuinely save half the cost of a journey by doing this sometimes! A lot of young Brits don't start driving until their early 20s, meaning that a whole generation became expert railfare detectives!

Thing is, opening to competition is one thing, privatisation is another. The UK needed to keep British Rail, while allowing private operators (a la Czech Republic or Germany or Austria). An example that British Rail could've followed: British Telecom (BT). After dire moments, they're now thriving again. Privatizing everything from tracks signals to trains was meant for failure.

Food for thought! The ECML is a very good illustration of privatisation and renationalisation. BR might have been run down but at least you had a unified fare structure which was easy to understand. Covid of course has changed everything, but there is now the opportunity to create a better railway system for the 21st century.

It was the worst of both worlds: a government managed market. All the privatisations were harmed by this to some greater or lesser degree, with government control by appointed political regulators. There are too many groups demanding government subsidy to properly privatise services.
